Regeneration of the Thames Gateway
Challenge
The largest single residential development in Europe is taking place on a disused power station East of London as part of the regeneration of the Thames Gateway. The site is dissected by numerous overhead and underground electric lines of all voltages from 11,000 volts up to the UK's largest transmission lines operating at 400,000 volts. The developers require the removal of the lines in order to free up developable land.
Solution
Having been consulted by the developers Hamer Associates are carrying out a range of functions. Advising on the legal rights, or the lack of rights, the electricity companies have for retaining their apparatus on the site in order to highlight the potential strategies to be adopted for the lines to be removed. Hamer Associates are currently negotiating with the electricity companies in conjunction with and on behalf of the developers in order to reach an agreeable solution. It is anticipated that settlement will be reached quickly which will not only result in the vast majority of the lines being removed or rerouted but at a cost saving to the developer of potentially £millions.
